🌟 Pattern Overview

This project is beginner-to-intermediate and worked in continuous rounds. The toucan stands at about 7–9 inches tall, depending on your yarn type.

The most fun part? That chunky, color-blocked beak — it’s what gives your toucan that cheeky tropical personality.

✨ Let’s Get Tropical: Step-by-Step Pattern

🖤 1. Body (Start from Bottom Up)

Use black yarn.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring
Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) around (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)
Rnd 5–10: sc in each st (24)
Rnd 11: (2 sc, dec) around (18)
Rnd 12–13: sc in each st (18)
Rnd 14: (sc, dec) around (12) — stuff firmly as you go
Rnd 15: dec around (6)
Fasten off, weave in the end.

⚪ 2. Face Patch

Use white yarn.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: (sc, inc) around (9)
Rnd 3: sc in each st (9)
Flatten and sew to the front-top of the body where the head would go.

💛🟠🟩 3. Beak (Work in 3 Color Sections)

We’re going bold here. Switch colors to create that signature rainbow beak!

Start with yellow (base):
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: inc in each st (12)
Rnd 3: sc in each st (12)

Switch to orange:
Rnd 4–6: sc around (12)

Switch to green or blue:
Rnd 7–8: (sc, dec) around (8)
Rnd 9: sc around
Stuff lightly, flatten, and sew to front of face patch — tilted slightly up.

📝 Optional: Use pink or red to embroider a stripe between color changes for extra tropical flair.

🟣 4. Wings (Make 2)

Use black yarn.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: (sc, inc) around (9)
Rnd 3–5: sc around (9)
Flatten and sew to each side of the body.

💛 5. Feet (Make 2)

Yellow yarn again.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: sc around
Flatten, fasten off, and sew to the bottom-front of the body so your toucan can "sit."

👁 6. Eyes

📌 Option 1: Safety eyes

  • Insert just above the white face patch, 4–5 stitches apart

📌 Option 2: Embroidered

  • Use black thread for the pupil

  • Add a tiny white stitch for a “glint” – trust me, it makes it adorable

🎀 Finishing Touches

Now for the fun part — giving your toucan some soul:

🖍️ Add some soft blush to the cheeks
🎩 Give it a mini top hat or flower crown
📛 Name it! (My last one was called Tiki Tony, but yours might be Beakoncé or Toucan Sam Jr.)

☀️ And You’re Done!

Your plushie toucan is now ready to chill on your bookshelf, join your plushie zoo, or fly off to its forever home. The bold colours, that iconic beak, and the cheeky vibe make it a crowd favourite — especially as a handmade gift.

🌺 Made one? I’d LOVE to see it! Send a pic in the comments.
